Washington, DC – A national veterans group is today endorsing the campaign of Cal Cunningham, a fellow veteran, to replace Senator Richard Burr as Senator from North Carolina.  VoteVets.org PAC plans to raise money for Cunningham online and make a direct donation to his campaign, as well.

“Veterans need Cal Cunningham in the Senate.  North Carolina needs Cal Cunningham in the Senate.  And, America needs Cal Cunningham in the Senate,” said Jon Soltz, Iraq War Veteran and Chairman of VoteVets.org.  “In the military and in the State Senate, Cal has shown the leadership and vision that this nation so desperately needs.  He cracked down on the abhorrent actions of contractors in Iraq, and will bring the same dogged determination to hold corporations, contractors, and banks responsible, in Washington.  He’s the strongest possible candidate to take on Senator Burr, who has been nothing short of hostile to veterans, and an embarrassment to North Carolina.”

According to the scorecard of Disabled American Veterans, Senator Burr has voted more often against veterans, than with them – voting against billions in funding for veterans care, and assured funding for the Department of Veterans’ Affairs.  Burr also stood steadfastly against a new GI Bill for America’s veterans.
Cal Cunningham is a former State Senator, and Captain in the U.S. Army Reserves. Cunningham served a one year tour in Iraq and was a lead military prosecutor, earning a Bronze Star for cracking down on contractor crimes that harmed the mission and wasted taxpayer dollars.

During 2008, Cal served as a military prosecutor at the Multi-National Corps-Iraq. During his tour, he was government counsel on the first court-martial of a contractor under military law since 1968. In addition to the Bronze Star Medal, he received the General Douglas MacArthur Leadership Award for his leadership.

In the U.S. Senate, Cunningham has vowed to fight to improve health care an job training for veterans, to protect North Carolina's military communities and the bases that create thousands of jobs, and to strengthen North Carolina's public schools, community colleges, and universities so we can grow the new economy jobs that will power an American comeback..

In November 2000, Cal was elected to the North Carolina State Senate, representing Davidson, Rowan and Iredell Counties.

VoteVets.org Political Action Committee seeks to elect more veterans to Congress, particularly those who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.  The group was founded in 2006, and has made donations to both Democratic and Republican campaigns.
