Ad comes as new poll shows Iraq and Afghanistan veterans heavily support Climate Change bill
TUCSCON, Arizona – Veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars are today thanking Representative Gabrielle Giffords for her vote in favor of Clean Energy Legislation in Congress, in a new radio ad running around area airwaves.
Airing 66 times through the week on talk and music radio, the ad features a veteran of the Iraq war from Arizona. The ad is being run by VoteVets.org Action Fund. The full script of the ad is below.
The ad can be heard here: http://votevets.org/tools/pages/files/ENVISIOArizonanRadio60.mp3?1270478930
The ad features the voice of Mark Cardenas, a veteran who served with Arizona National Guard as an MP in Iraq, from August, 2006 to October, 2007.
The bill Rep. Giffords supports would cut our dependence on foreign oil by half in ten years – much of that being oil that is imported from states on the Transportation Security Administration “watch list” for having “significant terrorist activity.”
The ad is being released at the same time as a compelling new poll of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans that finds that 73 percent of them support Clean Energy Climate Change legislation in Congress, 79 percent believe ending our dependence on foreign oil is important to national security, and 67 percent support the argument that such legislation will help their own economic prospects. That poll is being released by VoteVets.org, and can be found here: http://votevets.org/pages/?id=0037

Mark Cardenas:
Serving in Iraq, I saw firsthand our country’s dependence on oil.
Coming home to Arizona, I see firsthand how our dependence on oil is holding back our state’s economy.
Every day, America sends millions of dollars to Middle East nations for oil – the profits of which partly fund the very same terrorists we’re fighting. I should know – I fought those same enemies.
A lot of politicians refuse to look to the future for our energy needs. Not Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. Congresswoman Giffords knows a clean energy economy will produce thousands of jobs for Arizonans like me.
As an Arizonan, Congresswoman Giffords knows what clean energy legislation would mean for us. $10 billion in economic activity in our state. 50,000 construction-phase jobs. And 4,000 permanent jobs, right here in Arizona.
Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords stood up and voted for a real clean energy bill in Congress. I hope you’ll join me in thanking Congresswoman Giffords. From Arizona, and our troops, please keep fighting for us. Paid for by VoteVets.org Action Fund.
