VoteVets Statement on Senate Republicans War Powers Resolution Vote

Washington, DC – Today, in response to Senate Republicans voting down Senator Tim Kane’s War Powers Resolution, VoteVets Senior Advisor Major General Paul Eaton, US Army, retired, released the following statement:

“As we head into America’s 250th anniversary, we know about No Taxation Without Representation. But the power to wage war was also given to Congress, the same as the power of the purse. It was put there for one reason: Americans should never be asked to fight, kill, and possibly die without having a say in the matter, through their elected representatives. That principle is central to the idea of having both a volunteer force and, in rare instances, conscription.

As of this moment, the president of the United States is waging a war that he unilaterally declared, and refuses to get approved by the American people via their representation in Congress. It isn’t just criminal and unconstitutional. It betrays those who did fight on battlefields and spilled blood to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States. We stand strongly behind Senator Kaine and his colleagues, who are not letting up on this core principle. Shame on the Republicans who continue to shirk their duty and deny their constituents a voice.”
