DALLAS, TX – The largest progressive group of Veterans in America, VoteVets PAC, is today endorsing Dr. Brian Williams to be the next Member of Congress from Texas’ 32nd Congressional District.
“Dr. Williams stepped up and served this nation in uniform as his father did before him,” said Jon Soltz, Iraq War Veteran and Chairman of VoteVets PAC. “With the skills he acquired, he could have gone anywhere and done anything, but he chose to pursue a career saving lives in their most desperate moment. Dr. Williams knows what weapons of war do in a way that most people will thankfully never have to know. In Congress, he’ll be uniquely positioned to advocate for sane gun laws that make this nation safer. We’re very proud to endorse him.”
Dr. Brian Williams is an Air Force Veteran, trauma surgeon, and gun safety advocate. He is the son of a career Air Force non-commissioned officer and himself a proud first-generation graduate of the United States Air Force Academy, Class of ‘91. Dr. Williams served six years on active duty as an aeronautical engineer directing classified developmental test programs. After answering the call to medicine, Dr. Williams worked as a trauma surgeon at safety-net hospitals to continue serving his community and country.
On July 7, 2016, Dr. Williams was the trauma surgeon on call when a gunman shot fourteen police officers at a peaceful protest in Dallas. Dr. Williams treated seven of those officers, and the experience led him to pursue life-saving change outside of the operating room. He has since served our country as a health policy advisor to Senator Chris Murphy and then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and an advocate for gun safety reform.
Dr. Williams’ memoir, The Bodies Keep Coming: Dispatches from a Black Trauma Surgeon on Racism, Violence, and How We Heal, describes how his military service informed his political activism, and provides an unflinching account of his experience as a trauma surgeon dealing with the human toll of gun violence. It will be released nationwide on September 26, 2023.
