Harold Pope Jr.

Born and raised in Pueblo, Colorado, Harold was deeply influenced by his hometown’s “Home of Heroes” legacy, leading him to a distinguished 20-year career in the U.S. Air Force. Beginning as a dental technician, he later earned a B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of New Mexico and a commission through ROTC. As an officer, he managed critical programs involving satellite systems and nuclear deterrence before retiring from Kirtland AFB in 2018. His commitment to service is mirrored by his academic pursuits, which include an MA in Operational Leadership, an MS in Pharmaceutical Chemistry, and an Executive MBA.

In 2020, Harold made history as the first African American elected to the New Mexico Senate. Since taking office, he has held key leadership roles, including Vice Chair of the Senate Education Committee and Chair of the Military & Veterans Affairs Committee. A prolific legislator, he has championed a wide range of issues such as veterans’ rights, education, renewable energy, and police reform. Beyond the Roundhouse, he remains a dedicated community leader, leveraging his extensive background in leadership and science to advocate for civil rights, housing, and environmental protections for all New Mexicans.
