Our New Ad, Kos Wrapper, and Our Oil Addiction

A new television ad today running nationally and in eight states, sponsored by VoteVets.org in conjunction with Operation Free, makes a very clear point - to combat those who would do us harm, and protect America, we don't need more war, we need to cut their funding and effect their ability to cause havoc. One of the best ways to do that, right now, is pass clean energy and climate legislation in Congress, which would cut our oil dependence in half.

Tough Votes

This ad from VoteVets is slightly hyperbolic, but it does an excellent job of highlighting the absurdity of the idea of a climate bill as a "tough vote"

And it's true. Losing a limb in a war fought because the American economy is hyper-dependent on oil is tough. Having a hurricane-induced flood destroy your home is tough. Having your fields dry up and your crops die because rain patterns shifted is tough. Having your town shot-up by interlopers from two villages down because their fields dried up and their crops died because rain patterns shifted is tough. Paying higher taxes to build a seawall around Manhattan is tough. Getting astma because of particulate air pollution is tough.

Veterans Launch Powerful Clean Energy Ad Tying Foreign Oil to Troop Deaths

A veterans' group launched a powerful national ad campaign today with video images that make a chilling connection between the United States' reliance on foreign oil and the deaths of U.S. troops in Iraq.
The goal of the campaign is to encourage a national shift toward cleaner energy and away from reliance on oil. It's a shift that is also increasingly being encouraged by top military officials who recognize that foreign oil is putting their troops in harm's way.

US war veterans today announced that they will commit close to a million dollars to an ad campaign -- running nationally and in eight states - which ties Iran's ability to create new and powerful weapons used against our troops to our addiction to oil. It calls on Congress to pass comprehensive clean energy legislation and defund our most dangerous enemies.
That can't come soon enough. Fighting in two wars, and reminded that our military has other responsibilities around the world, like in Haiti, overextension of our forces will continue for the foreseeable future. That means men and women being pushed to the brink on their fifth and sixth tours. Meanwhile, specialists, like hundreds of desperately needed translators, have been ripped from our military under Don't Ask, Don't Tell, leaving our servicemembers to fight shorthanded. Both of these issues can be alleviated with a repeal of the law.

"Every day that the facility at Guantanamo Bay remains open and detainees are held there without trial is another day that terror networks have an effective recruiting poster," Jon Soltz, the director of VoteVets.org, a group that works to elect progressive veterans to Congress, said in a letter to lawmakers signed by more than 2,000 veterans. It shows "that the United States applies the laws to some, but is hypocritical when it comes to others."

Here's an idea: Let's just keep our best troops, no matter what their background or orientation. Those with a criminal history who have proven to be good troops can stay. Those who are openly gay will abide by the same strict rules that govern heterosexual relationships in the military. If they break the rules, they're out. But if they also prove to be valuable soldiers, we keep them, too. When our top concern is a military made up of the very best society has to offer, America wins.

Tomorrow, under an agreement with the Iraqi government, American troops are slated to completely pull back from major cities. The Iraqi security forces don't seem ready for it. And, while it seems counter-intuitive, if they aren't getting their act together, we need to speed up our departure.

Here's an idea: Let's just keep our best troops, no matter what their background or orientation. Those with a criminal history who have proven to be good troops can stay. Those who are openly gay will abide by the same strict rules that govern heterosexual relationships in the military. If they break the rules, they're out.
"Every time an American is killed in Iraq, it is a tragedy, and today's loss is extremely saddening. However, on behalf of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, I would urge the media to be prudent in its reporting, and not jump to conclusions or characterizations. Already one report that the suspect took his own life has proven to be false. For those who lost their lives, their families, and for all the troops, we all need to exercise caution, and not speculate about this tragic event or the events surrounding it."

100 Days On Veterans: A Reason To Hope

There's only so much a President can do in 100 days, and we don't know what a President will do in the remaining 4-years-minus-100 days, so it is hard to say a whether a President has been a success or failure. However, when looking at the needs of veterans at the end of the Bush administration, and whether those needs have been fulfilled, it's tough to say that President Obama's first 100 days haven't been incredibly encouraging.

Sen. McCain's strategy for launching an indefinite war in Iraq, unlike Sen. Barack Obama's, is a policy of retreat in the war on terror. Extremists in Afghanistan and Pakistan have regained their strength, thus making us less secure. John McCain in 2003 was horribly wrong -- there was no "muddling through" in Afghanistan. The choice in 2003 was taking the fight to the enemy -- or not. McCain chose not! That was a grave error in his judgment.

Christopher LeJeune spent a year in Iraq with the Utah Army National Guard in 2003-04 and came home, with a 60 percent disability because of post-traumatic stress disorder and hearing loss. He wanted to leave the military alone for a while. "I was in a bad place," the Taylorsville resident and father of four said.

He came away from Iraq feeling like the military effort there had been accomplished and that the rebuilding work, although essential, was not the military's job. "They need good, clean water, good electricity. But these are not the jobs of tank gunners and Bradley drivers and artillerymen," he said. U.S. forces, he believes, need to be in Afghanistan.

Vote Vets, an organization founded by military veterans, released a new ad which, according to the release, will have a limited run on cable in the Washington, DC area this week. The ad features an Iraq veteran with her infant son and alludes to McCain's comments that he's committed to staying in Iraq for a lengthy period of time. The veteran says, "this is my little boy. He was born a year after I came back from Iraq. What kind of commitment are you making to him? How about a thousand years of affordable health care, or a thousand years of keeping America safe? Can we afford that for my child, Senator McCain? Or have you already promised to spend trillions -- in Baghdad?"

As the only combat veteran among the remaining presidential candidates, John McCain has a unique relationship to the current generation of vets cycling home from the fronts in Iraq and Afghanistan. What do veterans think of McCain? Are they inclined to hold him in higher respect, or follow his candidacy with a more critical eye? Can he count on their vote, or does he need to work twice as hard to assure them his plan for Iraq is the right one?

MEMBERS of Congress and other political leaders often say that the men and women who have served in our military since 9/11 are the "new greatest generation." Well, here's a thought from two infantry combat veterans of the Vietnam era's "wounded generation": if you truly believe that our Iraq and Afghanistan veterans are like those who fought in World War II, let us provide them with the same G.I.
According to Jon Soltz, an Iraq war veteran who heads VoteVets.org, "Troops that enter the military go through an extensive physical and intense training prior to joining their assigned unit. The rigorous screening makes these new numbers even more shocking, because those who showed any tendency to commit suicide are people who would never have qualified for military service from the start. Clearly, these are tendencies that largely come about as a direct result of being deployed to war."

As a retired four-star general and former presidential candidate, you're about to publish a memoir whose title, "A Time to Lead," might seem to suggest you're personally eager to lead this country. Is that an accurate reading? "A Time to Lead" is a time for America to lead. That is the intention of the title. Certainly we are having a leadership crisis. We have an administration that has lost all sense of strategic purpose in the Mideast. I am very concerned that we have lost the foundation of America's worldwide power and influence. It has been squandered.

Joe Lieberman Just Doesn't Get It

I was wondering when I was going to get to this point. You know the Jerry Maguire point, when you are up at, oh, 3am writing. It's here. I'm officially depressed because of Joe Lieberman.

He just put me over the top. What a coward. There is no other word to describe him. Because he spent ten days in Iraq, he now is supporting this crazy notion that we need more troops in Iraq. I have never supported hard timelines in Iraq, I don't even think we should "leave tomorrow," but to increase forces just shows blatant disregard for the troops in harms way.
